In 1783, the Raba family, a family of merchants exiled from Portugal during the Inquisition, ordered the construction of the Château Raba by Victor Louis, the architect famous for having built the Grand Theatre in Bordeaux.
The Raba property fascinated its numerous guests, notably due to its enchanting parkland, which was nicknamed the “Chantilly of Bordeaux”.
This fascinating property was a well known meeting place as the Raba family permitted its visitors to visit the whole property, including the reception rooms and music rooms…
The visitors could admire the impeccable lawn with statues and fountains carefully placed, pathways lined with superb exotic trees leading to the aviary and the labyrinth designed by hedges or mythical animals. Some vestiges are left like the sphinx which at that time guarded the chateau.
The celebrities of the time used to come and visit the famous “Chantilly” … the parliamentaries of Bordeaux, the Beaumarchais in 1808, and even Napoleon and Josephine visited the Chateau Raba.
A stunning guest house was built to accommodate all the privileged guests of the chateau at the start of the 19th Century. Keeping in line with the architecture of the property, the “Pavillon” benefits from impossibly high ceilings and arched curves of the neoclassical times. In 1958, the Chateau and its parkland was classed as a historic monument by the Batiments de France.
Now the “La Réserve au Pavillon du château Raba” has returned to its former glory and initial purpose. Entirely renovated in 2007 with the highest attention to detail and tradition, this outstanding property welcomes you as a guest to the Chateau was once welcomed…
